COURSE OUTLINE

InScribe University’s course guides the student through five separate modules of instruction. Each module is divided into relevant sections. At InScribe, we have designed a linear course guiding the student through a series of modules that build one upon the other.

Module One – English Basics and Introduction to Medical Terminology

Module One instructs the students in the basics of English grammar and punctuation. Students will learn the basic rules of punctuation and sentence structure. Students will then be introduced to medical terminology and will learn the difference between prefixes and suffixes, noun and adjective forms of terms, and how to break down a long, complex medical term. Students will also be introduced to the use of acronyms and will learn the difference between an antonym, eponym and homophone. The final section in module one shares tips on setting up and maintaining a productive work environment, setting good boundaries when working from home, and increasing productivity through organisation and keyboard productivity.

  • Section one: Basics of English grammar and punctuation.
  • Section two: Introduction to medical terminology and understanding medical terms.
  • Section three: Abbreviations, symbols and special terms in medical documents.
  • Section four: Commonly used acronyms, antonyms, eponyms and homophones.
  • Section five: Productivity

Module One is accompanied by a guide to setting up a workstation at home, instructions on getting started with InScribe University, a foot pedal, a copy of Medical Abbreviations: 30,000, and a quick reference punctuation guide.

Module Two – Report Formats

In this module, the student is instructed in the purpose of the medical report, HIPAA rules governing the exchange of medical reports and understanding, formatting and transcribing four of the major reports used in acute care. The student will be introduced to the anatomic position, positions of the body used during surgery and recovery, anatomic terms, landmarks on the body, divisions of the abdomen and body cavities. Students will then be introduced to each of the body’s organ systems and their associated medical specialties. The student is introduced to the History and Physical Report as well, the largest and one of the most challenging reports for a transcriptionist.

  • Section one: The anatomic position and various planes through which a body can be bisected.

A final exam will be given to assess the student's readiness to enter the field of medical transcription.

The internship is an important part of Module Five. Students during this portion of Module Five will complete a 40-hour internship during which they will work on live documents within InScribe, working side-by-side with a dedicated mentor and other experienced MTs. This internship is designed to introduce new MTs to one of the many different platforms on which they will transcribe once employed and to offer an opportunity to produce reports in real time and gain invaluable training and input from MTs with many years experience in the field of medical transcription.
